Hacking the Router - DIY of the Year?!
Posted by motherduce on June 6th, 2006Adam Pash at Lifehacker seems to think this is the hack of the year. I posted about it on my wordpress.com blog a LONG time ago, and never actually got around to doing it for my home office. I think I will this week. I’ve been meaning to configure my router better for torrent downloads, online gaming, and just browsing in general. A related project is getting my son’s G3 iMac up and running wirelessly, without the ridiculous cost of an old skool airport card.
Of all the great DIY projects at this year’s Maker Faire,
the one project that really caught my eye involved converting a regular
old $60 router into a powerful, highly configurable $600 router. The
router has an interesting history,
but all you really need to know is that the special sauce lies in
embedding Linux in your router. I found this project especially
attractive because: 1) It’s easy, and 2) it’s totally free.
